How To Drive In The Rain
December 30, 2010 by Jacqueline Ursula

Driving in the rain sounds like a pretty simple task right? Not here in Southern California where I live. It hardly ever rains here and most folks here have absolutely no clue how to drive when it pours. Some drivers will continue to speed and weave in an out at 80 mph in a downpour while others are relegated to driving like a turtle at 20 mph while clutching the steering wheel for dear life. Here are a few tips to help you battle the rainy weather on the streets.
You will be able to see much clearer if you keep a large amount of space between your car and the vehicle ahead. The car in front of you will make huge splashes of water towards your direction making it nearly impossible to see anything. Since I am also not accustomed to driving in wet weather, I really assumed that it was my own auto making these splashes on the freeway and reducing my visibility. Once I changed lanes into a lane without any cars these splashes of water disappeared and I was able to see again! This made me realize that it was the car in front of me splashing water directly at me.
Leaving your home early gives you enough time to deal with obstacles on the road. Rain tends to cause a large number of problems in Southern California (where I reside) ranging from catastrophic accidents, mud slides, landslides, non-functioning stop lights and a host of other issues. Leaving earlier allows for extra time to deal with these issues.
Turn on your lights and use your turn signals- This shouldn’t be a tough one; obviously rain reduces your visibility and therefore it makes sense to turn on the lights in order to make yourself visible to your fellow drivers. But, I’ve seen many cases of idiots driving on the 405 freeway with their lights turned off in a pouring storm and as a result endangering all the drivers around them as well.
It’s a excellent thought to slow down since it takes a longer distance to brake on slipper roads. But, there’s really no need to drive like a turtle at thirty miles per hour on the freeway. Not only is this unnecessary but it can result in annoying fellow drivers on the road.
Check your tires first and make sure they got plenty of tread left before you head out. If you’re tires are near bald without much thread then you probably won’t want to head outside, unless you want to hydroplane or spin out on the street; both highly perilous incidents.

The Ultimate Ford – 2011 Shelby GT500
December 22, 2010 by Windy Reigns

Let’s face it there are two types of car buyers: practical individuals who just need something to get them to and from their daily destinations and car fanatics who forge a like affair with their automobiles. The Ford Mustang has been a prize possession the ‘enthusiasts’ group for decades and as the Ford Motor Company continues to make improvements on this dearly loved American icon the romance continues.
A favorite among car aficionados is the Mustang GT500. Now 2011 marks the return of the 5.4 liter aluminum engine. Impressive power numbers will make your head spin at 550 horsepower. In addition to the return of the 5.4 liter engine, the all new Shelby GT 500 is lighter and much quicker than previous models. A lighter structure, enhanced horsepower and awesome speed are a fantastic combination for a muscle car. In addition this model is tuned by SVT Performance which added components to the suspension. This new 2011 Ford Shelby also gets lightweight wheels with better performing rubber.
The 2011 Shelby GT500 weighs about 3820 lbs. which is 100 pounds lighter than the 2010 model. Also the weight is better distributed at 57/43 front to rear weight distribution. This is close to Ferrari territory, all coming from a car with a gigantic 5.0 liter V-8 engine under the hood. Speaking of the engine lets crack this puppy open. Most significantly the engine block is not made of aluminum rather than iron. The aluminum block is not only lighter, but it can distribute heat simpler. Why is heat vital? Well, the 2011 Ford Shelby GT500 has a huge supercharger sting on top of the engine. The Shelby also has DOHC which control 32 valves for effectively moving air and exhaust out of the cylinder. Out back the 550 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque is distributed to the road through a 3.37 limited-slip rear end.
Supercharged muscle cars deliver performance times and the 2011 Ford Shelby is no exception. The 2011 Ford Shelby GT500 can clip off 0-60 MPH in the low 4-second range. The mile drag is conquered in 12 seconds flat at 115 MPH. This all from a car with a price tag of $50,000. Till now, this level of performance was reserved for the likes of Ferrari and Lamborghini. Believe it or not the car gets excellent gas mileage. Avoiding the additional gas tax imposed on gas guzzlers, the 2011 Shelby GT500 gets 15 MPG in the city and 23 MPG on the highway. These are phenomenal numbers considering you have 540 HP available under your foot.
As far as safety goes the GT500 has front and side curtain airbags. The NTHSA and the IIHS both gave the new Shelby excellent scores on crash test safety. These are the two governing bodies on crash test safety and data in the U.S. Outstanding traction control to avoid spinouts and unfailing stability control to avoid collisions were two of the top reasons for the high marks by both entities. In addition to the peace of mind these safety measures serve up a 60 month/60,00 mile warranty is standard with all new models.
If the last few years of sales numbers are any indicator; you should see a Shelby GT500 prowling the streets near you. With a price tag of around $50,000, the 2011 Ford Shelby is well within reach of Mustang enthusiasts everywhere. Oh and the sport stripes are awesome!

Myths About Hybrid Cars
December 21, 2010 by Colin Jones
If you are thinking about a hybrid car, you may be hearing quite a bit of “gossip”. Some people reckon the hybrid car is the best thing on the market. Other people say it will just pass. Yet other people again say they reckon they can save a packet, but you’re not sure it’s really worth it. What’s the truth, and how do you separate myth from fact with all of the stuff that is being thrown at you? Below, you can read and consider the common hybrid vehicle myths.
Hybrid cars are just the same as electric cars: This is not right because hybrid vehicles are fuel-powered for the most part. But they have what are called ‘battery assists’. The help is powered by a nickel-metal hydride battery pack that is rechargeable.
You are guaranteed to save money with a hybrid car: If you are doing town motoring, you may save gas and you may not. The same goes for highway driving. There are just many different factors. It has been said that if everyone bought hybrid cars, the fuel consumption would drop by only 10%. That’s not a very huge difference.
A hybrid vehicle’s battery can run flat: A hybrid car’s battery should not run out when you are really driving it. The engine of a hybrid car does not idle when stopped (at a red traffic light for example). What does it do then? Well, it recharges its battery. So there’s no need to worry about a hybrid vehicle stopping for that reason.
A hybrid vehicle’s rechargeable battery lasts only for 2 years: A hybrid car certainly would not be worth purchasing if this was right. A hybrid car’s rechargeable batteries usually come with an eight-year guaranty.
If I run out of fuel, I can keep driving on the hybrid vehicle battery: Bear in mind that, a hybrid’s battery is an help. That means that hybrid cars still run on fuel. After you run out of gas, the battery may keep the car running for a small while. But, the car will stop running pretty soon.
Hybrid cars will soon place conventional car dealers out of business: This probably won’t take place anytime soon. The reason for the delay has to do with the how much hybrids cost. Many people just can’t afford one. Also, people just aren’t certain whether they will really save money by buying a hybrid car. Therefore, they are loathe to join the rush of people who want to buy a hybrid vehicle.
Hybrid cars will only save you about 88 dollars a year: I did see something on the news once, but it may not be right. If there’s something you really want and there’s a lot of rumour surrounding it, you simply have got to do some research yourself. There are many different types of hybrid vehicle, and many different manufacturers make them. This means that there may be much more involved than we have time to discuss here. A hybrid car may be of use to you, and it may not, but at the end of the day, is up to you.
Therefore, please don’t worry too much about what people say. They probably have only listened to others passing on rumours Do your own due diligence and make up your own mind. Try the Internet to get your information. The manufacturer’s advertising is also rather useful, if you stick to reading the facts and gloss over the gloss. Check that what the literature claims is also in the warranty.
